TIPS to get band 7 in IELTS general writing task 1


The writing module is the most difficult module for most students, and they find it hard to get a band 7 in this module. Why is it so? Because they don’t know the strategy to attempt writing questions. In this module, you’ll get two questions for 
task 1 and task 2. You’ll have a total of 60 minutes to attempt these questions. Task-1 weightage is 40%, while Task-2 weightage is 60%.

You’ll have 20 minutes to complete task 1 and 40 minutes to attempt task 2 questions.

Let’s first check the marking criteria.

  • Task Achievement (25%)
  • Coherence and Cohesion (25%)
  • Grammar (25%)
  • Vocabulary (25%)

Task Achievement:

In task achievement, the examiner will check whether you addressed all parts of the questions or not. To get good bands in task achievement, you need to understand questions, and you need to address all parts of the questions.

Coherence and Cohesion:

You need to fully develop your ideas and your explanation, and it must be related to your main idea and add value or support to the main idea about which you are talking.

Grammar:

To get a band 7 in the grammar portion. Your 50% sentences must be error-free. It means you need to avoid grammatical mistakes related to tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, active and passive, etc.

Vocabulary:

To get a band 7 in vocabulary, you need to use some less common, topic-specific vocabulary. Don’t take any risks with vocabulary only use those words about which you are 100% sure. Never learn simple words. Try to learn to use new words in a different scenario.

These are the above-mentioned parameters to get a band 7 in writing. You need to get a band 7 in all the above four marking criteria.

Task-1 General: 

In writing task 1 general, you’ll get a letter. You’ll have 20 minutes to attempt task 1. There are two types of letters formal and informal letters. 

To attempt writing task 1, you need to understand first whether a letter is a formal or informal letter. Always remember if a question has the word ‘friend’ then, it is an informal letter. Otherwise, it is a formal letter. 

We mostly write formal letters to managers, and directors, for different purposes, like to complain, for compliments, for work time off, to apologize, etc.

Strategy to attempt writing task-1 formal letters 

  • Identification of whether the letter is formal or not
  • Formal vocabulary and tone 
  • Do not use contractions
  • Do not use emoticons
  • Do not use abbreviations
  • Proofread for 2-3 minutes
  • Take only 20 minutes to attempt 1

Opening of Formal Letters

Dear Sir / Madam, (Generally) exception if you’re writing a formal letter to your colleague or to someone whom you know you can address him by his name, such as Dear Mr. Ali, 

Purpose statement

A purpose statement means why you are writing. 

If you are writing to apologize, then you can say. 

I am writing to apologize for the inconvenience caused because of my negligence. 

If you are writing to ask for some days, you can say. 

 I am writing to request you some days off from work because of 

If you are writing to express your dissatisfaction with the product or service

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the product that I recently purchased from your shop. 

If you are writing to share some good news with your employer

I am writing to share the good news with you about the

I am delighted to share the good news with you about the

If you are writing to make a complaint about anything you can write

I am writing to make a complaint about the food quality of your restaurant. 

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the product/service

Paragraph- 1 

Paragraph-1 will be about point 1 given in the question. Try to write 40-50 words. Your first line must be a direct reply to the bullet point, and then you further develop your paragraph. Please do remember clarity and accuracy both matter a lot.

Paragraph -2 

Paragraph 2 will be about point 2 given in the question. Try to write 40-50 words. Your first line must be a direct reply to the bullet point and then you further develop your paragraph. Please do remember clarity and accuracy both matter a lot.

Paragraph-3 

Paragraph 3 will be about point 3 given in the question. Try to write 40-50 words. Your first line must be a direct reply to the bullet point, and then you further develop your paragraph. Please do remember clarity and accuracy both matter a lot.

Closing / Signoff 

If you are writing Dear Sir or Madam then sign off Yours faithfully. 

If you are writing Dear Mr. Ali then sign off Yours sincerely.
