In this article, I will walk you through my journey of writing a resume for a job. I have been working for 9 years in the same institute, and after all these amazing years I thought to try something new in any other industry. I started searching for jobs on the internet, and on LinkedIn and started applying for different positions. But the result was surprising “no response” from employers then I realized there is something wrong with my resume and I started collecting information about writing resumes and software that is being used by companies for filtering resumes that best suit the advertised position.
Thinking
about not getting a reply from an employer was disturbing and I become
determined to know the gap with some effort and searching I started following recruiters
on LinkedIn and found the gap. The answer
to my problem was “Competency-based Resumes”.
This
is what I was doing wrong. We usually write down the list of tasks that we performed,
courses, etc. and this is what employers don’t want to see. To fill the gap and
to know it deeply I registered for the course on resume writing on Coursera.
With every lecture, I started realizing how
many people waste their precious time in finding jobs and end up with nothing
because of their resumes.
That is why I am writing this to guide you on
what can you change in your resume that can have a great positive impact on
your job searching journey.
I would like to share with you some key points
that you need to follow while writing your resume for the next job.
· Read the description of the
advertised job. Check for keywords, like communication skills, team player,
assist, time management, computer-related skills, etc.
·
Always remember you need to
make a separate resume for each position you are applying for. A single resume is not a key to unlocking
every job opportunity.
· Note down all keywords given
in the job description and start writing your professional experience using
these keywords.
· When writing your professional
experience mention what was the problem, how you solved and what was the result
or impact of the solution or how it supported your organization’s vision. For
instance, To promote a paperless environment, trained
more than 200 faculty members and 6000 students on how to use email and drive,
and as a result, a 30% decrease in the use of paper for communication.
· Add relevant experience, do
remember that a resume is for securing your first interview. It is not your autobiography
so always add relevant experience.
·
Mention relevant certifications,
projects, tools, language, etc. don’t add irrelevant things.
· When writing an objective
do mention relevant keywords that describe who you are, your skills, and your strengths.
